‍We live in an age of the triple-A blockbuster. For the most part, this is a good thing. Movies that cost $60 million to make and market tend to be successful, giving movie studios the financial incentive to continue making movies in a particular genre or by a particular studio. Nevertheless, the very nature of these movies is propelling the cinema industry forward at an unprecedented rate.

Because of this, it’s often been necessary for production companies and studios to turn down lucrative offers just to maintain their footing financially in these uncertain times. Luckily for them, they’ve stumbled upon something rather lucrative: the movie rights of a bestselling book series.

The otherworldly success of franchises like Harry Potter and The Pokemon Company has made Hollywood producers believe they can do the same with any book that catches their eye. Due to this blind faith in their ability to adapt any work into a movie regardless of its quality, we have compiled a list of the most expensive movies in the world based on research performed by Box Office Mojo (a website that tracks film sales and expenses).

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

The first Harry Potter book to hit the big screen was a massive success, earning $974 million in global ticket sales. This put it at No. 3 on our list of the most expensive movies in the world. In the book, Harry Potter is a boy who lives with his aunt and uncle, who are also his guardians, in a small cottage. One day, he finds a mysterious letter in his mail addressed to him as ‘Hogwarts’. He discovers that he is a wizard, but is unaware of the world of magic around him until a series of dangerous events thrusts him into the Wizarding World. He must then learn to use his powers and fit into his new society. The story follows Harry as he attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he meets new friends, discovers a danger threatening the Wizarding World, and finds out the truth about his past. The film has earned $317 million at the worldwide box office.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

The Twilight films are among the most successful movie franchises in history. When the first film, Twilight, came out in 2010, it was a huge success, earning $652 million at the box office. The second film saw even greater success, raking in $749 million.

However, when the third and final film, Breaking Dawn Part 1, was release in 2012, it was a huge disappointment, managing to only earn $296 million around the world. This came as a shock to the film industry, as this marked the first time a film in a blockbuster series had failed to earn as much as the movies that came before it.

The series is particularly infamous for its gratuitous and overly dramatic sex scenes between its main characters. Therefore, the failure of Breaking Dawn Part 1 made headlines, and it is unlikely that the studios will try to make a fourth film in the series.

The films are about a high school student who falls in love with a vampire and must protect him from the vengeful humans who have created a treaty that forbids vampires from entering the human world. In order to do so, she must transform from a regular girl into a vampire.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

The first Twilight film was a hit, but it was the second movie, Breaking Dawn Part 2, that brought the series back to the top of the box-office charts. As a result, it is the most expensive film in the world. The story continues where the second movie of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 1, left off.

The final chapter of the series sees Bella and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee, come of age while the Cullens struggle with the decision to let her live among humans. The Cullens win the right to show her the world, and Bella is reevaluate to join them.

However, the portal between the worlds is close, and the Cullens must decide whether to show her how the world would be if vampires were real or keep her in the dark. Breaking Dawn Part 2 was a massive success, earning $751 million at the box office.
